The inspiration behind Changsha Fundoland is to create an offline social entertainment metaverse, a place where visitors can escape the monotony of everyday life. The designer used train-like installations as a symbol to lead visitors into a dream world. The elements of trains, subways, carriages, and tunnels are transformed into echoes of this dream world, offering a deeper level of adventure and unreality.
What sets Changsha Fundoland apart is its aim to set the trend for offline entertainment scenes. Xiang Li has transformed traditional consumption behavior into a sensory consumption experience. This is achieved by integrating a story with the consumption circulation, allowing consumers to shuttle between virtual and reality, and experience an extreme futuristic art atmosphere.
The design realization of Changsha Fundoland is a complex process. The space of over 4,500 square meters integrates more than ten diverse and complex entertainment areas and functional zones. Behind the thematic theater-style and realistic construction is a complex design planning system that integrates function and aesthetics, presenting a series of complete immersive experiences.
The project faced several challenges, including the irregular spatial boundary and non-removable columns of the space. To overcome these, Xiang Li divided a 60m long corridor space which avoided the interference of the columns and created a main traffic artery that also functions as a restaurant and pub. Other entertainment areas are planned on both sides of the tunnel, enhancing accessibility and increasing its exploratory aspect.
Changsha Fundoland is located at L3 BBG Star World, No.398 Xiangfu East Road, Yuhua District, Changsha. It was built and opened to the public in September 2022. The project is anchored in the popular areas of contemporary youth consumption, integrating diversified entertainment businesses such as restaurants and pubs, livehouse, bowling alley, ktv, etc, to build a secret urban stronghold for the trendy crowd.
The design was awarded Silver in A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2023. The award recognizes top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. These designs, admired for their strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, showcase a remarkable level of excellence and introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
